"On Longstoned, the longstanding British duo of Mike Cross and Mike Ward rework material recorded by friends, labelmates and collaborators, usually to the point where there is little of the original left. The title, in this respect, is entirely appropriate: rarely listening to a track more than once before remixing it, the duo tend to come up with an altered state of mind rather than simply a redraft of an existing composition. "C/A1foot Remix" has a sedate confidence, sounding remarkably wholesome and cohesive considering its origin in "One Foot Under" by brooding instrumentalists Charles Atlas. "Gind-Stoned" builds from the material of Will Sergeant's Theme From Grind album, and accomodates the gentle tones of bass clarinet within its tightly coiled grooves. Other outstanding moments include a broken-backed take on "Kinski" by Stylus, Kev Fox's light-operated theremin on "CMCW" and an Acidic reinvention of Galen's "Dulce Part 1""

"Over the last decade, the Mikes Ward and Cross have tackled found sounds, ambient sound-scapes and drones over 5 albums, 2 EPs and a host of comp appearances under the Longstone guise, as well as their alter-egos Serpents and Brickwerk. On Longstoned the duo compile their remix work for other artists including Silverman, Will Sergeant and Stylus, the majority of which are previously unreleased, and while the original material may be eclectic, the reworkings, mostly incorporating samples from original sources rather than straightforward, recognizable facsimiles, play out like an album proper, a rare feat given that most other remix projects have an incoherent feel. Lying somewhere between The Orb's ambience and Warp's finest glitch moments, this may yet bring Longstone the wider attention the duo so thoroughly deserve.
